GOODPLAYER / RELEASE NOTES

GoodPlayer,
through the versions.

12.13 (1219): cumulative improvements since 12.07, focused on network playback, subtitles and file management.

Version 12.13 (1219)

Cumulative changes after 12.07 (1212), through 12.13 (1219).

Highlights

  • Updated the playback engine, fixed seeking in some network MKV and TS videos, and improved pause and resume behavior.
  • Improved multilingual subtitles, fixed missing characters and reduced overlap with playback controls.
  • Improved local server and cloud access, including IPv6 connections and batch file operations.
  • Fixed permanent deletion in Recently Removed to free up storage, and simplified how removed files and duplicate names are shown.
  • Added an in-app language setting; restart GoodPlayer after changing it.
  • Fixed clipped buttons and improved layouts during rotation and window resizing.
  • Fixed crashes involving bookmarks, file browsing, exports and playback.

Detailed release notes

This update improves network playback, subtitles and file management, with fixes for everyday browsing and playback issues.

Playback and subtitles

  • Updated the playback engine and fixed crashes when reading some MKV files.
  • Fixed seeking in some MKV and TS videos played from network sources, where the picture could stay near an earlier position after moving the progress slider. Improved duration display for network TS files.
  • Fixed unnecessary buffering or position changes when resuming paused playback, and improved responsiveness when quickly switching between Play and Pause.
  • Improved multilingual ASS subtitles, fixing characters that could appear as boxes when subtitles use several languages or writing systems.
  • Improved subtitle placement around playback controls, including while paused or resizing the window. Fixed a crash that could occur when loading external subtitles.

Servers and cloud storage

  • Improved local server discovery, FTP connections and playback on IPv6 networks.
  • Fixed cases where opening folders on AFP or NFS servers could stall, or some MP4 files would not play with the native player.
  • Improved server and cloud folder refreshes, sorting and batch selection. Fixed cases where a changing list could cause an action to affect the wrong item, and improved Dropbox operations and downloads after switching accounts.

File management and saved records

  • Fixed permanent deletion in Recently Removed. Open it in File Manager, tap Edit, select items, then choose Permanently Delete to free up storage. Moving files to Recently Removed alone does not free up space.
  • Newly removed files now appear directly in Recently Removed without an extra enclosing folder. Duplicate names receive suffixes such as -1 and -2; removed folders retain their structure. Previously removed items remain accessible.
  • Improved the reliability of batch file operations, downloads, exports and sharing. Fixed crashes during list refreshes, after moving or deleting files, and when returning to previous screens.
  • Fixed a crash when adding bookmarks during playback from a URL, and corrected bookmarks being saved against the previous video after a playlist change. Improved compatibility with existing URL history, bookmarks and saved server details.

Interface and reliability

  • Added an in-app language setting. Choose a language or Follow System, then restart GoodPlayer to apply the change.
  • Fixed clipped bottom buttons in file lists, cloud storage, downloads and the browser. Improved layouts in portrait, landscape, iPad Split View and smaller windows.
  • Improved playback controls, sorting menus, cloud sign-in pages, PDF previews and photo thumbnails when the window size changes, while preserving playback or pause state.
  • Fixed additional crashes when browsing UPnP/DLNA servers, switching pages and closing playback.

Permanently delete files and free up storage · Change the app language · Upgrading from older versions: 12.07 guidance

Version 12.07 (1212)

Cumulative changes since 11.2, through 12.07 (1212).

Highlights

Highlights since GoodPlayer 11.2:

  • Updated playback engine, improved video, live stream and subtitle compatibility, and multiple crash fixes.
  • Better seeking, resume, looping and touch controls. Pinch to switch between the full picture and filling the screen.
  • Updated local server access and Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and Box browsing, downloads and streaming.
  • Browser tabs, private browsing, Find in Page and desktop/mobile mode. Improved website downloads, plus background downloads with pause and resume for eligible independent file links.
  • Improved file imports, previews, sharing and Wi-Fi batch uploads. Existing files with the same name are preserved; local items moved to Recently Removed can be restored.
  • Improved dark mode, rotation and text across 24 languages, with upgrade compatibility for existing files, passwords, preferences and playback positions.

Upgrade notes: Requires iOS 18 / iPadOS 18 or later. Some cloud services and websites require sign-in again. In Google Drive, use Add Files to authorize your original files again; selecting a folder does not authorize all its contents. SMB 1-only servers need SMB 2 / SMB 3 enabled or another connection method. MLP, TrueHD and AC-4 audio are not supported by the current player; choose a supported track instead. Website-session downloads stop in the background; force quitting cancels background downloads.

Detailed release notes

GoodPlayer brings updated playback, subtitles, network access and file management, along with expanded browser and download features.

System support and upgrading

  • Requires iOS 18 / iPadOS 18 or later, with improved support for iOS 27 / iPadOS 27.
  • Upgrades continue to use your existing local files, folders, server settings and local passwords, with compatibility for older preferences and playback positions. Existing shared and private folders remain accessible.
  • Updated cloud and website sign-in methods may require you to sign in again. If an existing local password does not unlock your files after upgrading, keep the app and its data and use Password Recovery Help for guidance.

Playback and subtitles

  • Updated the playback engine for better compatibility with local videos, network videos and live streams. Fixed crashes when playing or closing some AV1 videos.
  • Improved playback support for formats including AC-3, E-AC-3, DTS and DivX. The current player does not support MLP, TrueHD (including Atmos carried in TrueHD) or AC-4. Choose another supported audio track, or use a copy converted to a format such as AAC or AC-3.
  • Hardware decoding is enabled by default. If you previously chose to turn it off, your choice is preserved.
  • Choose to resume automatically, start from the beginning, or be asked when a saved position is available. Improved compatibility with older playback positions and prevented files with the same name in different folders from sharing the wrong position.
  • Fixed seeking that jumped backward, controls that were difficult to bring back, and taps that unexpectedly paused playback. Improved looping and playlists, and fixed playback restarting after you had closed the player.
  • Video fits within the unobstructed screen area by default. With gestures enabled, spread two fingers to fill the screen with proportional cropping, or pinch inward to show the full picture. Improved video and control layouts during rotation.
  • Improved subtitle encoding detection and font display, reducing garbled text and missing characters. Improved discovery, switching, file names and sorting for external subtitles from local and network sources.
  • After downloading a subtitle, choose a media file to play with it. This applies to the current playback without changing the original subtitle or creating a permanent association.

Servers and cloud storage

  • Updated SMB file sharing, with improvements to sign-in, browsing, downloads, seeking and error messages. SMB connections now use SMB 2 / SMB 3. Older servers that only offer SMB 1 need a newer protocol enabled, or another supported connection method such as FTP or WebDAV.
  • Improved FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, NFS and AFP connections, folder listings and file transfers. Fixed issues involving some file names, server addresses and network playback.
  • Improved local server discovery, server name and IP address display, and list refreshes. Fixed crashes when playing or downloading UPnP / DLNA folders using the default sort order.
  • Updated Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and Box sign-in and access, with improvements to file listings, streaming and account switching.
  • Google Drive now accesses only files you select through Add Files. Authorization is required again after upgrading. Selecting a folder does not grant access to all its contents. If an existing playlist reports missing access, select the original files again using the same account.

Built-in browser and downloads

  • Added multiple normal and private tabs, Find in Page, and a choice of desktop or mobile website mode.
  • You can end a browsing session or clear website data. Private browsing does not save browsing history. Files you explicitly save remain in the selected folder, including after website data is cleared.
  • Improved website downloads, including attachments that require website sign-in and files exported from forms. Choose a name and destination folder, then follow transfer, verification and saving progress in Downloads.
  • Added system-managed background downloads for independent file links that require no sign-in and can be requested again. Pause and Resume are available when supported by the server and system. Downloads tied to a website session stop when the app enters the background. Force quitting the app also cancels background downloads.
  • Play, preview, rename, share or locate completed downloads. Removing a download record keeps the saved file. If saving is interrupted because a folder needs unlocking, for example, you can continue saving the downloaded content once access is restored.
  • Existing download records and unfinished files are retained. Older tasks without usable source or resume information require you to choose the source again.

File transfers and protection

  • Import files from Files or other apps while keeping originals and existing files with the same name. Improved document previews, text subtitle previews with encoding selection, sharing and Open In.
  • Wi-Fi Transfer supports selecting multiple files at once. Compatible desktop browsers can also upload folders while preserving their structure, except for empty folders.
  • Downloads, uploads, copies and archive extraction preserve existing files with the same name. Improved ZIP / RAR extraction, cancellation, low-storage handling and recovery after interruptions.
  • Restore local files and folders moved to Recently Removed. These items still use storage space.
  • Improved folder passwords, unlocking after returning from the background, and access checks for protected previews, playback and sharing. Resetting ordinary settings does not clear local passwords.

Interface and reliability

  • Improved dark mode, portrait and landscape layouts on iPhone and iPad, settings and menus, reducing clipped text and misplaced controls.
  • Expanded and corrected interface text and permission descriptions across 24 languages. Fixed some Chinese interfaces unexpectedly falling back to English.
  • Removed the inactive Retina Display, Color Space, iPod and iPod Fullscreen settings. Hardware decoding and the player's full-screen control remain available.
  • Fixed crashes involving playback history, the media library, server refreshes, file uploads and closing playback.
