GOODPLAYER / GUIDE

Connect GoodPlayer to an SMB server or NAS

Play media from a shared folder on your computer or NAS, or download a file to your device. GoodPlayer 12.07 uses SMB 2 / SMB 3.

Check the server first

Have the server’s local IP address, the name of the shared folder and an account allowed to read that folder ready. The password is the server account password, not your GoodPlayer local folder password.

Connect the iPhone or iPad to a network that can reach the server. For an ordinary home setup, use the same local network. Confirm that SMB file sharing is enabled and the server offers SMB 2 or SMB 3. A server that only offers SMB 1 will not connect with the current client.

Connect and test one file

  1. Open the SMB server list in GoodPlayer’s network connections. Add a server, or edit the saved connection you already use.
  2. Enter the server address and its account details. Check the address against the server’s current network settings; a NAS web administration page is not the SMB share itself.
  3. Save the connection and open it. Browse to the shared folder you intend to use.
  4. Start with one small media file you know plays correctly. Open it for streaming, or download it and test the saved copy.

An upgrade keeps saved server settings. If an old connection stops working, check its protocol, address and account before replacing it.

Find which part is failing

The server cannot be reached
Recheck its IP address, network connection and SMB service. Guest Wi-Fi or network isolation may prevent devices from reaching one another.
Sign-in fails
Check the account name and password on the server. Do not substitute the device passcode or GoodPlayer’s local password.
Sign-in works but a folder is missing
Check the share and that account’s folder permissions on the server. A working login does not imply access to every folder.
A file downloads but will not play
Try the downloaded copy. If it fails locally too, check the media and audio format. MLP, TrueHD and AC-4 audio are not supported by the current player.
Only an older SMB 1 server is available
Enable SMB 2 / SMB 3 if the server supports it, or use another connection method supported by that device, such as FTP or WebDAV.

Information that helps with support

Note the GoodPlayer version, iOS/iPadOS version, NAS or server model, SMB version and exact error message. Say whether browsing, downloading and playing the downloaded copy work. Send these observations to support without including your server password.
